Scarfell Pike Hike -14*C

We embarked on a last min trip to the Lake District Friday evening around 6:30pm, we encountered some snow on the outskirts of Wasdale which caused us some trouble passing the mountain roads in the VW T5 however eventually with caution we made it to Wasedale Head. After spending a long drive we were rewarded by the Milky way over Wast Water Lake which was truly amazing.

A cold nights sleep in the van wrapped up in three Duvets we woke for 6:30am to no breakfast, after forgetting to collect milk on route the night before. 7:15 we started our journey up the mountain. it started a little damp and pretty chilly but nothing too series and easy to see with just a touch and the moon light. Just after the river crossing we came across our first encounter with another camper who had spent the night in a tent on the mountain side, I'm sure he was disappointed to see there was no epic sunrise either just thin cloud at this point.

After a couple of hours of slowly walking up the mountain taking in the last of the views of Wast Water the snow started to get deeper and the temperature began to drop. The last mile of the Hike was fairly brutal with mild winds snow and sleat fall, the snow was around 8" deep at this point and visibility wasn't too good unless we got a very small break in the cloud for seconds at a time. Using the left path after the folk this time we used the stone stack markers to navigate to the summit where once again we were met with nothing but a cloudy view and sub arctic temperatures. it was -14*C at the summit and after resting for only a min or two we soon begin a fast pace back to the bottom.

Overall it was a much more enjoyable hike than the previous trip up Scarfell, the snow sure made it more interesting and photogenic. After a cold and tiring morning we managed to exchange some photography for a nights stay in an amazing Air BnB near Keswick which was the perfect locations for a restful evening, photos in next two blog posts.

Until next time Lake District, we had an amazing weekend, all paid for by photos taken during the trip.
